Many drivers turn to music for entertainment while they’re behind the wheel. Most people don’t think of this as a distraction unless the driver is changing the songs. Some people may not realize that the music playing in the vehicle can have an impact on the driver.
Two factors related to music, the volume and the tempo, seem to have the most impact on how a person drives. The issue with these is that the driver may not recognize just how much the music is affecting them.
Ways music can affect the way a person drives
Drivers will sometimes turn the volume of the music lower when they’re trying to find an address. However, there’s no evidence that the volume of the music has anything to do with the driver’s ability to see. Instead, the music may be distracting the driver cognitively, which would account for the need to turn the volume down.
There’s a chance that the tempo of the music will affect how fast a driver is going. Faster songs may lead to the driver going faster, but slower music may calm the driver and lead to them driving at a slower speed than what may happen with faster songs.
It’s important for drivers to always drive safely, so they should remain cognizant of how the music in the vehicle is affecting them. If the driver is driving negligently and strikes another vehicle, the occupants of that vehicle may need medical care. They may decide to seek compensation for the financial damages they’re experiencing. This must be done fairly quickly because of time limits established by law.
